7 Questions to Answer Before Developing a Functional Toy Under Your Brand

Functional toys can create a stronger product story, but a useful project brief needs more than a reference photo. The early questions below prevent time being spent on features that do not fit the target price, age group or retail message.

1. What should the child actually do?

Describe the play loop in one sentence. Examples include matching a prompt, completing a timed task, recording a voice, triggering a sound effect, following a light cue or adding an interaction to pretend play. The play loop should guide the function, not the other way around.

2. Who is the buyer and what is the price band?

Share the target channel, retail range and approximate position in the category. A feature that works for a premium gift may not fit a compact impulse item. This helps determine the component strategy and the packaging footprint early.

3. What must be customized?

Separate the essentials from optional changes: logo, color, housing, character, accessory set, sound content, language, packaging or instruction sheet. A clear priority list helps the team recommend a practical path.

4. Which functions are required?

List only the functions that support the play loop. For example: buttons, light effects, sound prompts, recording and playback, a simple IC-controlled sequence, countdown timing or motion activation. If there is a sample product, include a video showing the expected interaction.

5. Is local-language content part of the concept?

If prompts, songs or voice content are important, state the language, approximate number of phrases and whether content is supplied by your team. This avoids assuming that an existing sound module can simply be reused.

6. What does “ready” mean for this project?

Clarify whether the immediate goal is feasibility feedback, a rapid prototype, a sample, packaging artwork or production planning. Each stage has different inputs and review points.

7. Which documents and market requirements apply?

Requirements vary by product and destination. Provide the sales market and any required labeling, testing or documentation expectations so they can be reviewed with the actual product specification.
